This research offers a comprehensive and insightful examination of Ephrem’s poetic and symbolic approach to theology, particularly his reflections on the Virgin Mary’s role in the mystery of the Incarnation. By focusing on Hymns on the Nativity, the author delves into the ways Ephrem articulated Mary’s motherhood, presenting it in its dual aspects: human and divine. The study places particular emphasis on how Ephrem integrates his Christological vision with his Mariology, thus enriching the understanding of both these aspects of early Christian thought.
This thesis is particularly valuable in addressing a notable gap in Ephremian studies. While many scholars have undertaken philological, historical, and comparative studies of Ephrem’s writings, theological investigations, particularly those focused on Mariology, have been limited. This work bridges the gap by offering a theological perspective rooted in Ephrem’s symbolic and mystical expressions of faith. The Marian themes presented in Ephrem’s hymns are examined through a rich theological lens, enhancing the academic value of the research and offering a fresh look at his contribution to Christian doctrine.
